AI-generated transcript: Hello, well this is exciting, I wasn't expecting to do a video, I was expecting to just do a
podcast, but apparently this is a new thing that Substack's doing, so why not try it out?
Especially because tomorrow I'm going to be speaking at the Gaijin Pot Expo 2023 Jobs Fair.
Amazingly, they've asked me, one of the organizers has asked me to speak, so I'm going to use this as an opportunity to practice what I want to say.
I'm going to be on a panel to talk about
Changing Jobs in Japan for Foreigners
Akiba Square
but I'm preparing to speak so we'll see okay and I'm going to time it so okay this is me blah de blah de blah for about a minute and a half let me let me just say what I'm going to say
Okay, just imagine you're in the audience, okay?
Hello, let me introduce myself.
My name is Patrick Sherriff.
I'm going to tell you three things about me, three more things about what I do, and three things that I want you to do.
You got that?
That makes nine.
Okay, but I'll try and be quick.
Okay, number one.
So I'm from England.
Since 2007, I've lived in Abiko, which is the end of the line, the end of the Childa line.
I've worked as a reporter and copy editor for newspapers in the USA and the UK and Japan, none of which you've probably heard of, except for maybe in Japan I worked briefly for the Yomiuri Shimbun, or as we call it the Gomiuri Shimbun.
Maybe I shouldn't say that.
There might be some reporters there.
Number three, anyway I've been a self-employed English teacher since 2007 and I've just started a newsletter freetalktefl.substack.com which is for people who want to become self-employed English teachers in Japan.
Those are three things about me.
If I can be very brief I just want to say three things about self-employment.
Number one, self-employment is safer than working for a company.
work for a company you sell your labor to one customer the company self-employed you're selling your labor to hundreds potentially thousands of people number two there's an unlimited upside you could get a movie deal if you're an employee everything you do is owned by the company so number three you're also free to do whatever you want what I like to do is make books here are some examples of some of the books
So, okay, I'm with one.
I'm going as fast as I can.
Finally, three things for you.
I've got here some business cards with QR codes.
This one will download, you can download this book, Hannah Walker Mystery Book, for free.
This one, go here, and you can go straight to the TEFL, the freetalktefl.substack.com and please sign up.
You'll have lots of information if you're interested in being self-employed.
And finally, this one here is my free personal newsletter if you want to connect with me.
OK, I've taken too much of your time.
Thanks.
And if you have any questions, I'll be hanging around for later.
If you want to sign any movie deals or sign me up or sign my characters up for movie deals, I'll be more than happy to talk to you.
Thank you very much.
Okay, well that turned out to be about three minutes.
A three minute intro.
I wonder if I'll be able to get away with that.
Maybe not.
Okay, well hey, well thank you for bearing with me fellow freetalktefl.substack.com listeners and viewers.
And I'll talk to you again next week and I'll tell you how it all goes tomorrow.
And if you're around in Tokyo, come see me.
Okay, bye!
