Lesson Plan and teacher’s notes
The aim of the 40-minute lesson is to practice counting to 10, getting the concept that English has words for counting and they are different from the same words in Japanese! You are teaching some of the littlest of kids here, so keep your expectations pretty minor. Sometimes dealing with a group of four-year-olds is like trying to communicate with a bunch of (hopefully happy) drunks — don’t expect too much, stop any fights from brewing and have fun. Also don’t worry if things go a bit crazy or some kids can’t focus. They are only four! Keep changing the activities every five minutes and throw in more songs or running tasks as necessary.
Song: Hello Song
Song: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (or any counting song eg Once I caught a fish alive). Do the actions! If there are no actions to the song, make some!)
Use flashcards to model 1 to 10, have the children count with their fingers or use classrooom objects.
Do a relay with items or numbered cards (laminate them and pass them one by one to the kids, get the kids to run around the table with one, before handing it back to the teacher or the next student and saying the number aloud)
Do worksheet - get kids to count and colour in the objects.
Song: Walking, Walking or other counting songs
Dialogue/role play with cards
A: 1 please!
B: Here you are.
A: Thank you.
B: 2 please.
A: Here you are.etc…
Game (hide and seek with the flash cards or other countable objects in the classroom)
Story book: 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
Song: Bye Bye
