Teacher’s notes and lesson plan
The aim of the lesson is to teach the basics of doing a reading comprehension. The topic is a visit to the UK, but you don’t need any prior knowledge. The questions and answers are pretty obvious, but the object is to get the kids searching for the answers themselves — AKA reading.
You could have a three-hint quiz to guess a country to set the scene of the topic, or a card matching game (if you have a double set of cards of different nations’ flags).
Pre-teach any difficult words and chat to the kids about the UK and England (you do know that Great Britain is three nations — actually more like states — England, Scotland and Wales. Throw in Northern Ireland and that’s the UK, but it’s not on the map, so don’t sweat it. It’s not your fault that the British don’t have a simple way to explain who they are).
Handout the worksheet. Read the left side as a class activity (get students to write their answers to the questions that you’ve already gone over orally)
Get the class to write the answers themselves, ask and answer the questions with a partner then report back to the class (you can pick students to ask and answer in front of the class once you are sure they can answer by themselves.
