Lesson Plan and teacher’s notes
The aim of the 40-minute lesson is to introduce saying “It’s a xxx” or “It’s an xxx” with vocabulary objects, here food items. You are teaching the littlest of kids here, so keep your expectations pretty minor. Sometimes dealing with a group of three-year-olds is like trying to communicate with a bunch of (hopefully happy) drunks — don’t expect too much, stop any fights from brewing and have fun. Also don’t worry if things go a bit crazy or some kids can’t focus. They are only three! Keep changing the activities every five minutes and throw in more songs or running tasks as necessary.
Song: Hello Song
Song: Are you hungry?.
Use flashcards to model “It’s a xxx”
Do a relay with the flash cards or objects (pass them one by one to the kids, get the kids to run around the table with one, before handing it back to the teacher or the next student and saying “It’s a xxxx)” aloud)
Do worksheet - get kids to colour in the food items. Don’t stress if they scribble! They are still getting used to holding a crayon or felt tip.
Song: Walking, Walking or other songs with movement
Dialogue/role play with cards
A: What’s this?
B: It’s a banana.
A: Thank you.
B: You’re welcome.
etc…Game (hide and seek with the flash cards or other food objects in the classroom)
Story book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar or any that feature food vocab prominently
Song: Bye Bye
